Public engagement is one of the hallmarks of the Wisconsin Initiative for Science Literacy. Purposeful communication of the critical role of science and technology in society can help shape attitudes of the general public. Science literacy enlightens and enables pleple to make informed choices, be skeptical, and to reject shams, unproven conjecture, and to avoid being bamboozled into making foolish decisions where matters of science and technology are concerned. Science literacy is for everyone—scientists, artists, humanists, all professionals, the general public, youth and adults alike.

The Wisconsin Initiative for Science Literacy (WISL) invites faculty, staff, post-docs, graduate and undergraduate students to participate in "Science is Fun Public Presentations" during the 2017 Fall semester.

WISL will hold weekly training sessions from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Fridays in the Fall semester beginning on Friday, September 8 in Room B371 Chemistry. Additional time will be required for practice and for scheduled presentations in Dane County schools, on Campus, at shopping malls and at other community venues and events.

Interested in Credit?

Participation is open to everyone on a volunteer basis, but undergraduates can choose to sign up for Chemistry 350 which is a 2-credit hour course. Graduate students can choose to sign up for Chemistry 901 which is a 0-1 credit course. More details will be provided to everyone who is interested.

IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN JOINING THIS PROGRAM AND CAN COMMIT TO IT,

PLEASE SEND A MESSAGE TO scifun@chem.wisc.edu

Training will involve: learning scientific principles and phenomena, preparation for public presentations, developing skills for connecting with different audiences, mastering safety practices, and proper staging of demonstrations. Presenters will become comfortable in sharing their personal joy and fun in doing science.
