Rudy M. Baum

1954-2022

Rudy was a friend.

Rudy, while editor-in-chief of the ACS weekly newsmagazine (2004-2013), valiantly addressed some of the greatest challenges facing humanity. His thought-provoking editorials and editorial leadership made him an icon among the magazine’s worldwide readership.

Rudy had the courage to express his opinions forthrightly and honestly. He challenged us all to be scientist-citizens… for the benefit of Earth and its people.

Rudy was masterful and perseverant in calling attention to significant connections between chemistry and society and urging responsible action by ACS members and all scientists. He tackled inherently controversial topics―global warming, evolution, surging population growth, disease, violence and war, and the denial of basic human rights, especially the right to benefit from advances in science and technology.

We strive to live his legacy… for the benefit of Earth and its people.
